San Francisco Bicycle Coalition

Bike Safety Education

Hyper-Local Neighborhood Outreach

Background

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is one of the oldest and largest bicycle advocacy organizations in the country. Founded in 1971, the SF Bicycle Coalition brings together individuals working for a more bicycle-friendly city and promoting the bicycle for everyday transportation to support safer streets and more livable communities. In 2019, SF Bicycle Coalition hired Civic Edge to lead a bike safety education and outreach campaign that promoted upcoming bike education classes. Our team continues to work with SF Bicycle Coalition on its community engagement.

Approach

Civic Edge focused outreach by having our team of multilingual outreach ambassadors attend large community events. Relaxed and neighborhood friendly, the events provided an opportunity for outreach ambassadors to engage directly with attendees, hear their concerns about bicycle safety or infrastructure in San Francisco, and promote free upcoming bike education classes led by SF Bicycle Coalition. Civic Edge worked closely with the SF Bicycle Coalition staff to develop the talking points and materials for outreach.

Focus on Building Relationships

In-person, community-focused outreach helped personalize the bike education classes and build new relationships between SF Bicycle Coalition and community members. Outreach Ambassadors led conversations based on people’s level of interest, from beginner to daily rider, and connect them with the class information or additional SF Bicycle Coalition resources right for them.
